Planning, listed buildings and MCS

Solar is often permitted development, but conservation areas and listed buildings are a different matter — and a large part of West London is one or the other. Heat pumps have their own permitted development limits around siting and noise.

Rules change and every property is different. We confirm what applies to yours in writing at the survey rather than leaving you to guess.

Will solar work on my roof?

It depends on orientation, pitch and shading. South is best, east–west can still work, and a heavily shaded or north-facing roof usually isn't worth it. We'll tell you which you have.

Do I need planning permission for solar panels?

Often not, but conservation areas and listed buildings are a different matter — and much of West London is one or the other.

Is a heat pump right for a period flat?

Sometimes, but only if the heat loss and the emitters have been looked at properly. We'd rather do that survey and say no than install something that can't heat the place.

Can you install a battery without solar?

Yes — with a time-of-use tariff a battery alone can make sense. We'll run the numbers with you.
