There is a difference between a room that has been painted and a room that has been finished. Polished plaster, microcement, a lit stone wall or a panelled reveal are what people remember — and all of them depend on decisions made weeks earlier, at first fix.

What makes these finishes work

Lighting. A textured or polished finish is only as good as the light raking across it, and that wiring goes in at first fix, not afterwards.
Substrate. Polished plaster and microcement are unforgiving of a wall that is not flat and dry. Preparation is most of the job.
Sampling. Colours and sheens look entirely different at 3m² than on an A4 card. We make sample panels on site before anything is committed.

Want microcement in the bathroom. Photo attached — is it possible?

Possible, yes, but it depends entirely on what's under it.

Is that a suspended timber floor? If so it needs stabilising and tanking first or it'll craze within a year.

We'd make you a sample panel on site before you commit. It looks completely different at full size.

Design and sample
We agree the finish, make a sample panel on site, and look at it in daylight and at night before anything is ordered.

Coordinate first fix
Lighting, sockets and any concealed detail planned into the wall while it is still open.

Prepare the substrate
Substrate flattened, primed and left to dry properly. Rushing this is why these finishes fail.

Apply and protect
Applied by specialists, then protected until the room is handed over.

Where specialist finishes need care

These are largely unregulated finishes, but they are the ones most likely to fail if the preparation or the building fabric underneath is wrong — and in a listed interior, some of them need consent.

Rules change and every property is different. We confirm what applies to yours in writing at the survey rather than leaving you to guess.

Wet areas must be tanked before microcement or plaster is applied
Substrates need to be dry and stable; new plaster needs its full drying time first
Fire performance matters for wall linings in escape routes and communal areas
Listed interiors may need consent before covering or altering original surfaces
Concealed lighting must still be accessible for maintenance

Is microcement suitable for a bathroom?

Yes, and it looks superb, but only over a properly tanked and stable substrate with the right sealer. Over a flexing floor it will crack, and we will say so.

Can you match an existing finish?

Usually. Bring us a photo or a piece of it and we will make sample panels until it matches.

Do you do panelling and mouldings?

Yes — our own carpenters make it, then it is filled, sanded and spray or brush finished on site.

How long before we can use the room?

Most finishes are touch dry in a day but need several days to cure fully. We will give you the actual dates at the start rather than at the end.
