Air conditioning is the thing people wish they'd installed during the refurbishment rather than after it. Done during first fix, the pipework and condensate disappear into the structure. Done afterwards, there's trunking down a wall you've just had painted.

Get it in early

Condensate needs a fall to a drain. Retrofitting that into a finished room is the awkward part, not the unit.
External unit position matters for noise, for your neighbours and often for planning.
A unit sized by room area rather than heat load will either short-cycle or never keep up.

Permissions

Planning, noise and F-Gas

The indoor unit is nobody's business but yours. The outdoor unit can need planning permission depending on where it goes, and refrigerant work must be carried out by F-Gas certified engineers.

Rules change and every property is different. We confirm what applies to yours in writing at the survey rather than leaving you to guess.

External units can require planning permission, especially on a flat or listed building
Noise limits apply at the neighbouring property boundary
Refrigerant handling requires F-Gas certification
Condensate must discharge to a suitable drain, not a wall
In a flat, the lease and the freeholder normally govern external units

Do I need planning permission for air conditioning?

The external unit can need permission depending on where it goes, and almost certainly does on a listed building or in a conservation area. We check before quoting.

Can it heat as well as cool?

Most modern split systems do both, and they're efficient at it — often a sensible answer for a loft or a garden room.

How noisy is it?

The indoor unit is quiet. The outdoor unit is the one that matters for neighbours, and siting and mounting make a bigger difference than the model.

Can you install it in a finished house?

Yes, but the pipework and condensate will be more visible than if it had gone in during a refurbishment. We'll show you the route before we start.
