Period London houses have almost no square corners and almost no standard dimensions, which is why flat-pack storage in an alcove always leaves that two-centimetre gap filled with a scribe. Made properly on site, it looks like it was always there.
Where it matters
- Alcoves. No two are the same width, and they're rarely plumb — a made unit fits, a bought one is packed out.
- Wardrobes to a sloping ceiling in a loft, where a standard carcass simply cannot go.
- Second fix. Architrave, skirting and door linings are what make a refurbishment look finished or unfinished.
