Solar panels and heat pumps in West London

Roof-mounted solar, battery storage and air source heat pumps, specified against how the house actually performs rather than what the brochure claims.

We'll tell you something most installers won't: on a lot of West London properties, particularly listed ones and north-facing roofs, the numbers don't work as well as the marketing suggests. We'd rather survey, run the figures and tell you that than sell you a system that disappoints.

What we look at first

  • Roof orientation, pitch and shading — the three things that decide whether solar is worth doing at all.
  • Conservation area and listed building constraints, which are significant across much of our patch.
  • For heat pumps: whether the emitters and the insulation can work at a lower flow temperature, because a heat pump on undersized radiators disappoints everyone.

Roof-level works across West London

What's included in a solar or heat pump job

Our installers handle the whole of it, so there's no second company to chase and no gap between trades for something to fall through.

  • Roof and property survey
  • Shading and yield assessment
  • Solar PV installation
  • Battery storage
  • Inverter and isolation
  • Air source heat pump installation
  • Emitter sizing and upgrades
  • Cylinder replacement
  • Controls and metering
  • Electrical works and certification
  • Handover and training

Options

The three options, honestly compared

Solar PV — Solar & heat pumps by Ogival in West London

Solar PV

Generation on the roof. Orientation, pitch and shading decide whether it's worth doing at all.

Battery storage — Solar & heat pumps by Ogival in West London

Battery storage

Stores what you generate, or cheap overnight electricity. Can make sense even without solar.

Air source heat pumps — Solar & heat pumps by Ogival in West London

Air source heat pumps

Lower flow temperatures, which only work if the emitters and insulation can take it.

Quickest way to get an answer

Send a photo of your roof.

A photo from the garden or the street showing the roof slope, plus your postcode, and we can tell you roughly what's possible before visiting.

No form, no callback queue, no salesman. Emanuel looks at it himself and tells you what he sees — including the times the answer is that you don't need us.

Is solar worth it on our roof? Photo from the garden attached.
Honest answer: that slope faces roughly north-east, and there's a mature tree shading the lower half.
You'd generate something, but nothing like the figures in the brochure, and the payback would be long.
A battery on a time-of-use tariff might actually make you more money. Happy to run both sets of numbers.

How it runs

How a solar or heat pump job runs, stage by stage

Four stages, and you'll always know which one you're in.

  1. 01

    Roof and heat-loss survey

Roof, orientation, shading, existing heating and insulation — measured, not estimated.

  2. 02

    Specify and model the output

What it will actually generate or cost to run, with the assumptions shown.

  3. 03

    Install panels or heat pump

Mounting, panels, inverter and battery, or heat pump, cylinder and emitters.

  4. 04

    Commission and register

Tested, commissioned, registered, and we show you how to use it.

Permissions

Planning, listed buildings and MCS

Solar is often permitted development, but conservation areas and listed buildings are a different matter — and a large part of West London is one or the other. Heat pumps have their own permitted development limits around siting and noise.

Rules change and every property is different. We confirm what applies to yours in writing at the survey rather than leaving you to guess.

  • Solar panels are usually permitted development on a house, with limits on projection
  • Conservation areas restrict panels on front-facing or highway-facing slopes
  • Listed buildings require listed building consent
  • Heat pumps have permitted development limits on siting, size and noise
  • MCS certification is required for most grant and export schemes

Budget

How much does a solar or heat pump cost in London?

We don't publish prices, because a number without a survey is a guess and you'd be right not to trust it. These are the things that actually move it.

01

Array size and whether battery storage is included

02

Roof access and scaffolding

03

For heat pumps, whether radiators or pipework need upgrading

04

Cylinder replacement

05

Electrical supply and consumer unit capacity

06

Planning or listed building consent where required

How long does a solar or heat pump job take?

1–2 weeks on site for a typical job in West London, though the drawings, permissions and party wall process before it can add longer. We give you a written programme with the quote so you can see both.

A site visit and a written quote cost nothing, and the quote comes with a written schedule of works so you can see what every stage is for.

Before you appoint anyone

Four questions to ask before you hire anyone for solar or heat pump work

Ask them of us as well. The answers tell you more than the number at the bottom of the page — and a contractor who can't answer them quickly is telling you something too.

Ask us right now
  1. 01

Ask for the shading assessment, not just a panel count

  2. 02

Ask what the modelled output is and what assumptions sit behind it

  3. 03

For a heat pump, ask for the heat loss calculation before anything is specified

  4. 04

Be suspicious of anyone who doesn't mention your roof orientation

Questions we get asked

The things people ring up about.

The questions that come up on the phone most often, answered the way we'd answer them on site.

Will solar work on my roof?

It depends on orientation, pitch and shading. South is best, east–west can still work, and a heavily shaded or north-facing roof usually isn't worth it. We'll tell you which you have.

Do I need planning permission for solar panels?

Often not, but conservation areas and listed buildings are a different matter — and much of West London is one or the other.

Is a heat pump right for a period flat?

Sometimes, but only if the heat loss and the emitters have been looked at properly. We'd rather do that survey and say no than install something that can't heat the place.

Can you install a battery without solar?

Yes — with a time-of-use tariff a battery alone can make sense. We'll run the numbers with you.

The rest of what we do
