Period London houses have almost no square corners and almost no standard dimensions, which is why flat-pack storage in an alcove always leaves that two-centimetre gap filled with a scribe. Made properly on site, it looks like it was always there.

Where it matters

Alcoves. No two are the same width, and they're rarely plumb — a made unit fits, a bought one is packed out.
Wardrobes to a sloping ceiling in a loft, where a standard carcass simply cannot go.
Second fix. Architrave, skirting and door linings are what make a refurbishment look finished or unfinished.

Where joinery meets the regulations

Most joinery is unregulated, but staircases are not, and neither is anything that affects a fire escape route. If we're making a stair, it's designed to the building regulations for rise, going and headroom.

Rules change and every property is different. We confirm what applies to yours in writing at the survey rather than leaving you to guess.

Staircases must meet rise, going, pitch and headroom requirements
Balustrade heights and gap limits are set by regulation
Fire doors and door sets have to be specified and fitted as tested assemblies
In a listed building, replacing original joinery usually needs consent

How long does a joinery job take?

Do you make everything on site?

A mix. Carcasses are usually made in the workshop and finished on site, because a room in a Victorian house is never the shape the drawing says.

Can you match existing period mouldings?

Usually, yes. Skirting and architrave profiles can be matched or run to order — it's worth doing in a period property rather than defaulting to a modern profile.

Can you build around a sloping loft ceiling?

That's one of the most common things we're asked for, and it's where fitted joinery pays for itself compared with freestanding furniture.

Do you spray or brush the finish?

Either. Spray gives a flatter, more furniture-like finish; brush is easier to touch up later. We'll talk it through.
